Netflix has
said that most of their growth has come from word of mouth, but they are now
aiming to grow from actual marketing. Instead of advertising their free-trials,
Netflix is going to start advertising their actual content on the Internet and
on TV. Netflix is now investing more into their content that they offer, and
are noticing an increase in customers. Netflix has not really given their
customers the opportunity to share their experience with friends. Historically,
Netflix has done a very poor job with marketing and advertising through their
social media, which is a huge lost opportunity.
On April 23rd,
Netflix signed the creator of Arrested
Development, Mitch Hurwitz, to a multi-year deal. His job will be to create
new, original series for Netflix as well as other comedies. This could interest
a new market, and ultimately lead to an increase in customers for Netflix.
Amazon is
trying to become a player in the online video streaming service, but Netflix
says that they do not see Amazon as a competitor. An Amazon Prime membership
costs about the same as a Netflix membership (on a cost-per-year basis.) but
the difference is that the Netflix brand is all about their video content,
while Amazon Prime brands themselves on their free shipping. Amazon’s video
streaming service is much, much smaller content wise, than Netflix’s, and
Amazon’s video streaming is pretty much an “added feature”, instead of being
their main focus.

I have noticed an increase in Netflix marketing. I have seen a lot of digital advertising as well as a lot of sponsorship advertising on YouTube. I always thought that Netflix succeeded primarily because of their inventory system and then eventually their database and online streaming inventory. They were great visionaries and now I think marketing would help them out. I think that promotions would be a great way to dip into other markets and not just their target market. Good Post.
ReplyDeleteWith the different companies emerging online offering the same or similar services Netflix does, it will be interesting to see how they wind up changing their marketing campaign for sure. You definitely make a good point bringing this up as Netflix most likely had to almost re-strategize and come up with a whole new type of marketing campaign once these other companies started offering similar services. This is the kind of thing that keeps me from starting my own business. What if I do something great and others copy it but do it a little bit better (For example Amazon Prime video vs. Netflix)? it will be very interesting to see if Netflix or any of its competitors start offering additional services or content to try to compete with each other. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens.
ReplyDeleteNetflix seems to be trying to turn things around. Netflix would be wise to pay attention to Amazon online video streaming service for if think that one is better or best be when consumers go to the other comany or another company. As read the description of Netflix sounds that trying to do a better job of offering what individuals are wishing to watch. This could be a movie and then if is Spiderman show moive trailer for the latest Spiderman movie. Also can offer the Spiderman cartoon series, tv series and other related options. Then if a new selection is made that if a soap opera and a woman is watching to offer other soap opera shows and eposides to help one get that must watch viewing in. It will be interesting how having a special show for Netflix will work out. The jump in viewers can dramatically jump if the show is nominated for a award and more viewers if the show actually wins an award.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that different companies are emerging out everywhere to offer the same services as Netflix does. Right now, there defiantly seems to be a shift of things with the way that people watch TV. For instance, more and more A list actors are jumping from the big screen over to the small screen because of how well some shows are written and because of the money, of course. There is more of a push with the Netflix and online streaming because of this. As a society we have become faster paced with ourselves and because of this we are barely able to catch the TV shows and movies that we like at home. Companies like Netflix have taken advantage of this and are able to dominate the demand in the market for it. I think as long as there will be great creative talent to write good stories, people will want to watch those stories on TV.
